New York’s Apartment

Inspiration · The Design · Final Piece

This marked the beginning of my creative journey in New York, and I was eager to dive into the project. My client, who had recently relocated to the city with her husband, had a special request—to gift her husband a memorable piece of art.

Inspiration

For this unique commission, I decided to adopt a more illustrative approach. This approach provided me with greater creative freedom, as I wanted to avoid the often technical feel that architectural designs can have.

I drew inspiration from the illustrator James Gulliver Hancock, who sought out a mission to illustrate every building in New York for his book, "All the Buildings in New York." I admired his ability to capture the building's essence with simplicity, focusing on the essential elements without overwhelming details.

The Design

In order to capture the New York aesthetic for the apartment, I honed in on key architectural elements such as fire escapes, cornices, and bricks. My client had chosen the Premium Package, which allowed me to incorporate finer details like cross-hatch shading, intricate brickwork, and a detailed awning. The original building was notably tall, so I made an adjustment by focusing on the lower half of the structure to emphasize their apartment, making it the centerpiece of the artwork.

One notable design change was choosing a canvas over a hoop. The building's vertical nature made it difficult to fit within a hoop, and the canvas provided a more suitable canvas size. This decision also elevated the overall look of the piece, and I was pleased with the final result.
