Importance of the First Commission Sketch

When commissioning a bespoke embroidery piece, I want to eliminate as much mystery as possible. This way you as a client will know what to expect before paying anything. The first iteration sketch is a way for me to connect your special place and collaborate with you to make a bespoke piece truly yours.

The Purpose of the First Sketch

A sketch is a great way to get an idea down on the page so I can add revisions or edit the sketch later if I need to. The first iteration sketch is also the first time you will see your idea translated to paper. Embroidery is a slow craft so it’s best to show a concept before executing especially if revisions need to be made. This will also help you visualize your vision and make sure its a piece you are proud to own.

Gathering Your Inspiration

Each time I get a new commission application, I look through the reference photos you give but also why that place special to you. You might also want to highlight a part that you like the most like the plants in the window or the front door!

I use the application as a conversation starter for ideas and a jumping point to collaborate with you. During this stage it’s so important to have clear communication and actively listen so the inspiration comes more naturally.

At this stage, I also keep in mind the budget you selected so I don’t add too many details that might drive the price up.

Sketching Process

Rough Sketch

Before I even make a sketch ready for viewing, I start with some miniature sketches. This helps me try to see what components to translate from the photo and your preferences. It’s great for quick ideas before getting too into details.

Once I have all the components in my mind, I draw each element separate to make sure they aren’t too small to embroider. All of the elements are according to size and now it’s time to switch to the iPad! Using the reference photo, I sketch out everything as close as the final design. The idea is to make sure you can envision how the embroidery will be without actually seeing the final product.

Presenting the Sketch

Update: For future commissions, I’ll be presenting the sketch in a slide deck and alongside a video of me explaining the sketch!

I use Notion to present my proposal which allows me to include information important to the project such as the timeline and pricing. It’s also a great way for me to explain my reasoning behind the design(s).

Right before the sketches I take a moment to write a brief description about the sketches and what components are highlighted. Sometimes if you aren’t sure about which pricing plan to pick, I’ll draw for both plans. In this case, I’ll write what are the biggest differences between the designs.

Collaborating and Refining

Once I send over the proposal, I ask for any feedback on how we can tweak the design to your liking! Maybe those cornices are just looking too detailed or the curtain is not looking right. I can absolutely adjust this and send a revised copy. In the case we would need to start over, there might be an additional fee.

In the case a revision might not be possible, I’ll be sure to explain thoroughly why it might not work. Most of the time it’s related to the size of the piece and the detail would be too small or not possible to embroider.

For revisions, I’ll send an updated sketch and we can go from there!

Finalizing the Design

Final Design for NYC Commission

Once we are in love with the sketch, I move onto the final design of the piece! I’m taking the initial sketch but making sure the lines are straight and everything is looking clean. We will also solidify thread colors and any other minor details about the design.

Conclusion

The first iteration sketch is a vital step in the process of creating a bespoke embroidery piece. It allows for collaboration, visualization, and refinement, ensuring that the final design reflects your vision and captures the essence of your special place. I am excited to embark on this creative journey with you and create a truly unique and meaningful piece that you will cherish for years to come! Let's get started and transform your vision into a beautiful embroidered masterpiece.
