Reliance Building Tile

Research · Design · Final Piece

The Reliance Building, located in the loop area of Chicago, is a notable example of the Chicago school architectural style, featuring glazed terracotta tiles. The consistent use of these tiles on the building's exterior adds to its charm and significance.

Research

A few years ago, I came across the white glazed terracotta tiles of the Reliance Building on the Urban Remains website. I was captivated by their elegance, as well as the classic Chicago windows. Interestingly, the tile design incorporates a rosette motif commonly found in Mesopotamian architecture. This rosette motif is also present in the entrance of the Wrigley Building.

The Design

For my embroidery pattern, I aimed for a design that would be both easy to replicate and visually appealing. To achieve this, I utilized two line stitches and varied line weights, allowing the design to have depth and intricate detailing.

Finished Piece

Creating this piece reignited my passion for black line work. It is remarkable how much detail can be conveyed in such a small artwork.
